How To: Set Up Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

Overview

The first time you log into MySCF, you will be prompted to register for MultiFactor Authentication (MFA) using one of the following options:

  • Google AuthenticatorRecommended. This is a small, free, secure app that can be downloaded from the app store (iPhone or Android) and installed on any mobile device such as your phone. This app generates OTPs easily and is the fastest. It is also the only option that works on any device type you log into MySCF with. SCF does not have access to and is not collecting any personal information from this application.

  • YubiKey – A YubiKey is a secure USB key that must be kept on you at all times. The YubiKey will need to be inserted into a USB drive on the computer you’re using before you will be able to log in to services such as MySCF. YubiKeys do not work on every device.  They can also be difficult to use if the only available USB port is in a difficult to reach place, such as under a desk or in a cabinet. YubiKeys are available for purchase from the SCF Bookstore.

    • If enrolling on a device other than your phone: choose QR Code and you will be asked to scan a QR code on your screen to enroll your mobile authenticator. Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone, click the plus sign to add an enrollment, and choose ‘Scan a QR code’.  You may have to allow it permission to use your camera.

    • If enrolling from your phone directly: choose Manual Code Entry. Copy the OTP code that was generated and open the Google Authenticator app on your phone, click the plus sign to add an enrollment, choose ‘Enter a setup key’, and paste the generated OTP code.

Using Your YubiKey

Using your YubiKey is easy. Plug it into your computer and wait a moment or two for it to install itself.  This should only as long to install as plugging in a flash drive. Once installed, touching the “y” on the YubiKey will automatically type out your OTP for you into the box you selected.  If you don’t see any text, make sure you click into the OTP entry box.
